TWO of the area’s Conservative MPs have called on the PrimeMinister to cut £400 million a year subsidies for wind turbines.

Burton MP Andrew Griffiths and South Derbyshire MP Heather Wheeler were among more than 100 Conservative MPs who have written to David Cameron urging himto cut themassive subsidies.

TOURIST-friendly road signs will be installed around Burton to direct traffic to the National Football Centre.

An application to have the glossy metal signs was initially turned down but they will now be put up after intervention from a Government minister.

The multi-million pound National Football Centre at Rangemore was told it was not eligible for the signature brown tourism signs because it would fall short of the 100,000-visitors-a-year mark.

JUSTICE Secretary Kenneth Clarke has thrown his weight behind the Mail's Safer Burton campaign.

The senior cabinet member told the House of Commons he wished the people of Burton every success in trying to 'reduce the scourge of knife crime'.

COMPENSATION claims made by crooks who injure themselves while committing crimes must be stopped, Burton’s MP has claimed.

The rise of ‘no win-no fee’ lawyers has seen criminals make claims against the Government for injuries sustained while committing offences or while in prison.

Every year offenders claim around £5 million from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority.

Justice Secretary Ken Clarke has now pledged to make sure this money is directed towards victims of crime rather than offenders.

ANY minimum pricing on alcohol should target cheap booze in supermarkets rather than hitting breweries with further tax hikes, Burton’s MP has warned.

Conservative Andrew Griffiths said any minimum price should be a set ‘floor price’ rather than an added tax burden on Burton’s breweries.

Prime Minister David Cameron has indicated he would support a minimum alcohol price, with one suggestion pointing towards a sophisticated tax arrangement based on the number of alcoholic units in a drink.

APPRENTICESHIPS in Burton have nearly doubled in recent years, new figures have shown.

There were 960 youngsters serving apprenticeships in Burton and surrounding areas during 2010-11.

This rose sharply from 540 during 2009- 10 — signalling a surge of 76 per cent.

The increase was hailed by the town's MP as he unveiled the figures in a House of Commons debate on apprenticeships.

Tory backbencher Andrew Griffiths told fellow MPs: "The number of apprenticeships in my constituency has increased from 540 to 960.

It's a date! Animal charity unveils its calendar for 2012

THE Burton branch of the RSPCA has unveiled its 2012 calendar—featuring photographs of pets which have been through the centre.

The animal home in Hillfield Lane, Stretton, has put the calendar on sale after it was officially launched by Burton MP Andrew Griffiths.

The pictures used in the calendar were taken by Len Milner, deputy mayor of East Staffordshire and borough councillor for Stretton.

“Councillor Milner was kind enough to take the photos and we managed to get them printed free of charge,” RSPCA branch chairman Stella Downs said.

BURTON’S MP has called for action over the ‘spiralling cost’ of petrol.

Conservative Andrew Griffiths spoke in the House of Commons yesterday in a debate about how fuel prices could be driven down.

Mr Griffiths was among 116 MPs from different parties to sign the motion backing a debate on fuel prices, which also attracted 110,000 signatures in an online petition.

He said that industry and businesses in Burton had been ‘massively’ hit by recent hikes in fuel prices, and pointed the finger at supermarkets for holding a ‘monopoly’ on the marketplace.

THE arrival of hundreds of new jobs to Burton has been welcomed by the town’s MP.

Up to 200 new jobs will be up for grabs after a planning application for a major extension to Coopers Square shopping centre was granted on Monday.

The £25 million project will create 11 two-storey shops, a major department store and a rooftop car park.

Rumours are circulating that the department store will be Debenhams, but officials have refused to confirm anything until ‘contracts were finalised’.

An announcement about the department store is due at the end of the week.

Thousands show up with a desire to work

AROUND 2,500 jobseekers descended on Burton Albion’s Pirelli Stadium yesterday hoping to find employment at the biggest jobs fair in the town’s history.

Scores of people queued outside the building before the doors opened to the fair, where around 1,000 vacancies were up for grabs.

Forty five companies had stalls at the event, including Boots, which offered 200 vacancies, UPS offering 50, Vodafone offering 30 and even a selection from Sky TV.

JCB, Burton-based pub and brewing giants Spirit, Punch and Molson Coors, as well as Burton and South Derbyshire College, also had stalls.

The chairmen of two influential pub and beer groups for MPs have lent their support to the National Brewing Centre's bid to set up as a trust company.

A TORY MP says he has no sympathy for the ‘idiots’ sent to prison for looting and rioting.

Conservative Andrew Griffiths, who represents Burton and Uttoxeter, said that the public supported tough justice on those involved in disorder.

As the clean-up continues following last week’s unrest which saw rioting and looting hit towns and cities across England, two men from Warrington have been jailed for four years for inciting rioting on Facebook — even though the disorder never subsequently happened.

Concerns have been raised that sentences for convicted rioters were too severe.

MP's jobs fair is welcome

EARLY last month, 500 people queued outside Swadlincote TownHall to attend a jobs fair.

It was evidence, if any were needed, of the demand for employment in Burton and South Derbyshire.

With this in mind, it is heartening to report that Burton MP Andrew Griffiths has joined forces with Burton and District Chamber of Commerce and JobCentre Plus to organise a jobs fair at the Pirelli Stadium.

MY mailbag and inbox have been full of letters and emails about the phone hacking scandal. People are angry at revelations of widespread law-breaking in the press and alleged corruption by some police.

I was there when the Prime Minister made his statement this week, setting up the public inquiries to investigate lawbreaking by national newspapers and the failure of previous police investigations to uncover what had gone on.

BURTON’S MP has called for a change in the law to allow the owners of dogs who attack people on private land to be criminally prosecuted.

Andrew Griffiths spoke out about the problem during a parliamentary debate on dangerous dogs.

He used the example of eight-year-old Gypsy Prescott, from Stapenhill, whose ear was partially severed when her head had to be prised out of an Alsatian’s mouth earlier this year.

Despite the horrific nature of the incident, police and the RSPCA were powerless to take action against the animal’s owner as it happened on private property.

A TRAILBLAZING drug and alcohol treatment centre in Burton is to be used as an example for the Government’s new strategy to tackle booze-related illness.

Burton Addiction Centre founder Noreen Oliver and town MP Andrew Griffiths have been highlighting the good work done by the centre in a meeting with junior health minister Anne Milton.

MP's claim exposes expenses failings

BURTON’S MP has blasted ‘outrageous’ failings in the parliamentary expenses body after it failed to notice he had accidentally submitted a duplicate claim.

Andrew Griffiths only noticed the oversight by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) when the claim for almost £500 for a hotel stay and mobile phone bill was paid into his bank account twice.

Mr Griffiths said it was ‘outrageous’ that the IPSA, set up in 2009 in response to the MPs’ expenses scandal, had a system which he said was ‘less sophisticated than most small businesses’ and relied on MPs’ honesty.

MP in call for A50 probe after cyclist dies in crash

A CYCLIST has been killed after a collision involving a lorry on the A50 near Hatton.

Derbyshire police are appealing for witnesses to the incident which happened on the A50 westbound carriageway at around 8pm last Thursday.

The collision involved a white Mercedes lorry and a cyclist. The cyclist, a 47-yearold man from Staffordshire, died at the scene.

A spokesman for Derbyshire police said: “We can confirm that a 47-year-old man from Staffordshire has died following an incident involving a bike and a lorry on the A50 near Hatton.

Pub and brewing bosses named in trade's Top 50

SENIOR figures from Burton’s beer and pub industry have topped the tables in this year’s list of the 50 most influential people in brewing.

The bosses of Burton-based firms Punch Taverns and Marston’s Pub Company featured inside the top 20 and the town’s MP also made the list.

Ian Dyson, the chief executive of Punch, was number five on the list, published by The Publican’s Morning Advertiser, a trade magazine for landlords.

Success for Better Broadband Campaign

Burton’s MP Andrew Griffiths has welcomed BT’s announcement that Burton upon Trent’s telephone exchange will be upgraded to allow super-fast broadband connections by the end of next year, following his campaign for better internet services in the town.

The new fibre-optic connections will allow for speeds of 40Mb/s and will means that internet users with a fibre connection will be able to take advantage of much faster download and upload speeds for things like watching online video, sharing high resolution photos and exchanging large files.

BEER-LOVING Burton MP Andrew Griffiths is to open Britain’s biggest ale festival.

The Tory, new chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group, will inaugurate the five-day Great British Beer Festival at London’s Earls Court on August 2.

“It’s a huge honour to be asked to open what is Britain’s biggest and most important brewing event of the year,” Mr Griffiths said.

This is the single most celebrated event in the brewing calendar and is centred on championing and celebrating all that is great about British beer.

Weight restriction campaigners set up Facebook page

A CAMPAIGN group calling for a weight restriction on a major Burton road has revealed how it intends to step up its fight.

Shobnall Traffic Action Group (STAG) drew up the plan at its latest committee meeting when deciding what actions to take next in its bid to crack down on lorries using the B5017 Shobnall Road, Forest Road and Henhurst Hill as a shortcut to Burton business parks.

STAG is calling for a 7.5-tonne weight limit restriction on the B5017 due to concerns about noise, damage to cars and the safety of pedestrians and local schoolchildren.

Sex abuse charity secures future with new funding

A RAPE and sexual assault victims’ charity is celebrating after securing a new three-year funding deal with the Ministry of Justice.

The Burton Sexual Assault and Rape Advice Centre (SARAC) signed the deal after months of uncertainty about its future.

Top-secret depot heading for town

SCORES of jobs could be created in Burton if top-secret plans to build a multi-million pound warehouse complex are granted.

The secret location in the town is one of a number of sites being considered for the mammoth development.

Simarco, the £22 million-per-year logistics company behind the plans, wants to build a new warehouse and distribution hub in the Midlands.

The firm has announced that it is considering a site in Burton and is at an advanced stage of negotiations.

The new chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group has promised to increase the trade’s “political muscle” in Parliament.

Andrew Griffiths, MP for Burton and former vice-chairman of the group, was voted in as chairman last week at its annual general meeting.

He told the Publican’s Morning Advertiser: “The brewing industry and pubs haven’t had enough political clout in recent years.

“If you compare it to those lobbying for Scotch whisky and the wine industries there is no doubt beer has been the loser every time. Over successive parliaments beer has been a cash cow.”
